The acclaimed production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle at the Sofia National Opera makes a trip to Bulgaria worthwhile on its own. Under the guidance of its director, Plamen Kartaloff, the company has emerged as an unexpected and ambitious addition to Europe’s opera scene, and this is their greatest achievement so far. It is the focus of our eight-day tour in July 2018, led by Dr John Allison, editor of Opera magazine.
But there is a lot more to Bulgaria than its opera company. The country stands on one of history’s highways, between Europe and Asia Minor, and its strategic position has brought successive waves of conquerors and colonists, and a rich mix of cultures. Between performances, we will be unveiling many of its treasures – from a dazzling collection of Thracian gold at the National History Museum, to the Roman monuments and exquisite Ottoman mansions of Plovdiv.
