Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is one of the great European centres of Art Nouveau. As a result, it plays a significant role in our Secession trip – which celebrates the fin-de-siècle art and architecture of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
With Dr József Sisa of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences as our guide, we spend two days in the city. Here grand Art Nouveau monuments such as the Gresham Palace stand alongside more subtle and complex buildings - notably Aladár Árkay’s Fasori Reformed Church, which attempts to develop a more Hungarian architectural idiom.
