The story of St Petersburg’s survival is almost as remarkable as its foundation. At times, during the tortured years of the 20th century, this city of palaces seemed close to crumbling back into the sea. But it has emerged into the new century in something close to its original form. It is an extraordinary achievement, and on our six-day tour we will be exploring its finest monuments and museums. The art collections of the Hermitage alone are worth going for, but there are many other treats – from the vivid mosaics of the Church of the Resurrection to the epic scale and eye-watering opulence of the Catherine Palace.
