It is an exciting time to be visiting Slovakia. This is a country that finally emerged from Hungarian domination 100 years ago, and has only been truly independent since 1993. Its sense of self is still a work in progress.
But behind the novelty lies a rich cultural inheritance, and it is one we will be investigating on a three-day trip to Bratislava. Our main focus is the opera. Since the Second World War, the Bratislava Conservatory has produced a fabulous array of singers, and we will be assessing the latest crop of talent in two Verdi operas at the Slovak National Theatre. But we will also have time to explore the monuments of the city’s medieval core, as well as one of central Europe’s most interesting museums of modern art, the Danubiana Meulensteen.
